Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping your content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews quote and cite it in their generated answers. SEO fights for a ranked blue link. GEO fights to be the sentence the model repeats, with your name credited as the source.
What GEO actually optimizes for
In GEO, the win is inclusion in the generated answer: being one of the handful of sources the model pulls from, and ideally the one it names. Classic search returns a list. You scan ten links, click one, and read. An answer engine returns a paragraph. It reads the sources for you, synthesizes them, and hands back a written answer with a few citations attached. That changes the prize: in SEO, the win is a ranking position and the click that follows.
The mechanics are related but not identical. Answer engines still crawl, still read structured content, still weigh authority. But they don’t hand you a ranked list of blue links. They extract, summarize, and attribute. So the question shifts from “does my page rank?” to “is my page easy to quote, and worth quoting?”
GEO vs SEO: the real differences
The differences are about the unit of value and the shape of the answer.
They overlap more than the hype admits. Both reward clear structure, fast pages, and genuine authority. Neither rewards keyword stuffing. If your SEO foundation is solid, you are already partway to GEO.
- Unit of value. SEO optimizes a page for a ranking slot. GEO optimizes a passage for extraction. The model rarely quotes a whole page; it lifts a sentence or a short block.
- The output. SEO ends at your page. GEO often ends inside someone else’s interface, with a citation. You may get the credit without the click.
- Query style. Search queries are terse (“best crm small team”). AI prompts are conversational and specific (“what’s the cheapest CRM for a two-person agency that syncs with Gmail?”). GEO rewards content that answers the fuller question.
- Intent. Both live or die on search intent. Most queries are informational, and informational queries are exactly what answer engines love to summarize. That is where GEO pays off first.
None of this makes SEO obsolete. It adds a second scoreboard. You now compete for the ranked link and for the cited sentence, often with the same piece of content.
What makes a passage citable
Answer engines favor content they can lift cleanly and trust. Five traits show up again and again.
- A clear, direct answer up top. Lead with a self-contained statement that answers the question in two or three sentences, before any preamble. A model can quote it without stitching fragments together. (The first paragraph of this article is written that way on purpose.)
- Definitional passages. “X is …” and “X differs from Y because …” sentences are catnip for generated answers. Define your terms explicitly.
- Structured data and clean markup. Real headings, ordered lists, tables, and schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, Article) tell a parser where an answer starts and stops.
- Entity clarity. Name things plainly and consistently. Say who you are, what the product is, and how it relates to known concepts, so the model can resolve you to a stable entity rather than a vague string. A crisp glossary and consistent naming help here.
- Concrete specifics. Numbers, dates, named steps, and clearly-labelled examples get quoted more than mood. Use honest, verifiable facts. Do not invent a statistic to sound authoritative; a fabricated figure is a citation waiting to be debunked.
Notice these are the same habits that make content good for humans. GEO does not ask you to write for robots. It asks you to write with structure and stop burying the answer.
A worked example
A content blueprint — the cluster of related content built around a citable passage — is what earns you citations across dozens of related prompts, not just one.
Say you sell a quiet mechanical keyboard for open-plan offices. The classic SEO play is a page targeting “quiet mechanical keyboard.”
Now think in GEO terms. Someone asks Perplexity: “What’s the quietest mechanical keyboard I can use in an open office without annoying my coworkers?” To be the cited source, your content needs a passage that answers that exact question:
The quietest mechanical keyboards use silent linear or tactile switches (for example, dampened switches with O-rings), which cut the “click” that carries across an open office. Expect roughly a 30–40% drop in perceived noise versus standard switches. [figures illustrative]
That block is short, direct, defines the mechanism, and flags where the numbers are illustrative. It reads well to a person and lifts cleanly into an answer. Around it you build the cluster: a switch-type comparison, an office-etiquette FAQ, a buying guide.
Why a name and its content should be built for both
GEO rewards entity clarity, and your name is the first entity signal you send — this is where naming quietly decides your ceiling. A name that collides with a bigger brand, a generic dictionary word, or a crowded category makes you harder to resolve and easier to confuse for the model.
A keyword in the name won’t save you either. Google’s 2012 EMD update cut the ranking value of exact-match domains, and answer engines are even less impressed by a keyword stuffed into a URL. What moves the needle is a distinctive, resolvable name attached to genuinely citable content.

The GEO checklist
Run every important page through this:
- Answer first. A two or three sentence, self-contained answer in the opening, before any setup.
- Define the terms. At least one explicit “X is …” sentence per key concept.
- Structure it. Real headings, lists, and one table where it fits.
- Add schema. Article, FAQ, or HowTo markup that matches the content.
- Name the entity. Consistent product and brand naming; link to a definition.
- Be specific and honest. Real numbers and named steps; label illustrative examples; never fabricate a stat.
- Answer the fuller question. Write for the conversational prompt, not just the two-word keyword.
- Cover the cluster. One page rarely wins GEO; a coherent topic cluster does.
Do this, and the same page competes for the ranked link and the cited sentence at once.

Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO adds a second scoreboard; it does not retire the first. The technical foundations overlap heavily, from crawlability to structure to authority to intent, so most GEO work strengthens your SEO too. Treat them as one practice with two payoffs.
Can I measure whether AI engines cite me?
Partly. You can:
- Prompt the major engines with your target questions and check whether you appear and are named.
